In Summer 1937 it was therefore decided to create a separate Dutch unit in an effort to boost both morale and combat effectiveness. However, International Brigade command considered the Dutch volunteers’ military performance in Spain quite poor. They did so primarily as part of the International Brigades of the Spanish ‘Popular Army’. During the Spanish Civil War, about 700 Dutchmen fought to defend the Spanish Republic against a military uprising they, correctly, deemed the prelude to a Fascist dictatorship.
